Abstract
P27Kip1, a cyclin-dependent kinase inhibitor, plays an important role as inhibiting the progression of the cell cycle. Decreased expression of P27Kip1 is associated with high histological grade and aggressiveness of several tumors. Loss of P27Kip1 occurs early during carcinogenesis. Recently, subcellular cytoplasmic localization has also been proposed as a regulatory mechanism of P27Kip1 function. This study reviews all current information about the functions and regulation of p27, its deregulation during gastric carcinogenesis, and summarizes all evidence existing in the literature on the immunoexpression of P27Kip1 in gastric cancer.
