Challenges for personalized medicine: A 2020 vision

GBC Editors

ABSTRACT

Recent complete sequencing of human genomes of eight individuals from different geographical ancestry and the “1000 genomes” project will reveal why each of us is unique. Similarly, patients with complex diseases, such as cancer may differ in genetic profile of cancer genome even if they have the same tumor-node-stage and clinicopathologic features. Different genetic and epigenetic changes which drive tumorigenesis and metastases may be resistant to current anticancer therapies. In this article, we discuss the challenges and the potential of personalized medicine in a 2020 vision as faster and cheaper reading and writing of complete human genomes sequencing will widely become available.
