Advances in laparoscopic gastrectomy for early and advanced resectable gastric cancer

GBC Editors

ABSTRACT

Laparoscopic gastrectomy has rapidly been evolved over the last years and widely used for the treatment of gastric cancer in specialized institutions in Korea and Japan . Because of quality of life superiority, this minimally invasive approach attracts now major interest from patients and their physicians in the USA and Europe . Seven relatively small randomized controlled trials and large-scale retrospective studies have been until recently reported.

Here we discuss the strengthens and weaknesses of these reports, the requirements and challenges for performing a safe and effective laparoscopic gastrectomy, the controversy regarding tumor stage-based indications, and the latest advances in totally intracorporeal laparoscopic gastrectomy.
