Sentinel lymph node biopsy has changed traditional open surgical oncology. Laparoscopic sentinel node biopsy can further improve quality of life of patients with some solid tumors such as melanoma and breast cancer and exciting research is underway to assess its safety and efficacy also in other common cancers. Latest advances and challenges in this field are summarized.
