Surgery has been the standard care for patients with localized solid cancer. Despite advances in systemic control of cancer with cytotoxic chemotherapy and biologically targeted agents, the complete resection of the tumor in non-metastatic disease with surgery will continue to be an essential procedure in the foreseeable future.
