From standard ER, HER2 to Gene Expression Profiling as Predictor in Breast Cancer: Challenges in Clinical Individualized Implication
Evangelos Briasoulis, MD, Michael Fatouros, MD and Dimitrios H. Roukos,* MD

Despite the inclusion of ER and HER2 status as robust predictors, the goal of tailoring an optimal adjuvant treatment in individual women with breast cancer has not yet been achieved. Current overtreatment and inadequate treatment is thought to be owed to a lack of biologic and genetic information. Dramatic advances with microarrays-based gene expression profiling provide gene signatures as predictors of outcomes and response to therapies. Despite the exciting perspectives, several challenges should be overcome before the available and new genomic classifiers can successfully be converted in clinical practice.
