Cyclin E: A New Biologic Prognostic Marker
Abstract
Cyclin E, a regulator of the cell cycle, affects the behavior of breast-cancer cells. A recent retrospective study of 395 patients with breast cancer shows that overexpression of cyclin E and low-molecular-weight isoforms of cyclin E in tumor issue, as measured by Western blot assay, is a stronger predictor of poor survival than the currently used predictors, as node-positive cancer, negative estrogen-receptor status and late stage of disease (N Engl J Med 2002 Nov).
This fascinating finding may have important clinical implications, but validation by prospective evaluation and much work is needed before low-molecular-weight and total cyclin E can be considered as relevant biomarkers which can be used into clinical practice.
